Ren Zhengfei, President of Chinese Huawei Technology called on prime minister Shaukat Aziz on Tuesdayat at the PM House.
Talking to the president, The prime minister said Pakistan and China have a special relationship that was strategic, close and multifaceted covering political, diplomatic, economic, defence security, social and cultural fields and the enhanced levels of cooperation are in the mutual benefit of the two countries.
He asked Huawei Technology to take advantage of the geo-strategic location of Pakistan, the investment friendly policies of the government and to use Pakistan as a base to provide services to Middle East and the Gulf region.
The prime minister said due to investment friendly policies and the comparative and competitive advantages of doing business, Pakistan was now less costly than many regional countries and a number of companies particularly those working in the fields of IT, Telecom and media are shifting their businesses in Pakistan.
The prime minister said telecommunication was the fastest growing sector of the country touching 27 per cent teledensity compared to 4.5 per cent 4 years ago. The country has 37 million cellular phone subscribers and the number was fast growing.
He said Islamabad was rapidly emerging as an IT and Telecom hub and the government will develop one sector which will be setup as a technology park with all facilities for IT, Telecom and engineering businesses.
Ren Zhengfei said he was encouraged by the investment friendly policies of Pakistan, and Huawei Technology has plans to expand their business in Pakistan as a result of which the number of Pakistani IT & Telecom professionals working in their operations will be enhanced to 1,000 from the present 500.
Ren Zhengfei appreciated phenomenal growth and the development of telecommunication sector in Pakistan and said Huawei Technology has long term plans in Pakistan. Ren Zhengfei said Huawei Technology was currently working on a joint venture for software development with the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, and has plans to initiate more joint ventures with corresponding Pakistani companies.
The meeting was attended among others by Minister for IT & Telecommunication Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Ambassador of China in Islamabad Zhang Chun Xiang and senior officials.
